Each year the Alternative Classroom Experience (ACE) serves approximately 150 students in grades 3-5 who are facing challenges in school or at home. Students live and study at camp for five weeks during the school year. They live in cabins with up to 9 peers and two AmeriCorps counselors. ACE parents attend weekly parenting workshops on communication and discipline strategies. Our certified teacher and aide operate the on-site classroom with an adult:student ratio of 8:1. Results are amazing, showing an average academic growth of one-half grade level over just five weeks. When ACE graduates return to their regular classrooms, they are expected to continue showing academic, behavioral, and/or self-esteem improvements. Pfeifer Camp staff and AmeriCorps counselors support the child through 8th grade with school visits and overnight camp resiliency events. Graduates of ACE create a lifelong relationship with Pfeifer Camp and are encouraged to participate in summer camp and Counselor-in-Training (CIT) programs.
